Explore The History of Chinatown 5K

The Chinatown 5K has deep roots in our community, dating back to the 1970s when it was first organized by George Cheung—a dedicated community leader, ultra-marathoner, and owner of the Junk Restaurant on Archer Avenue, alongside his wife, Celia. George’s passion for running and commitment to Chinatown left a lasting impact, and in recognition of his contributions, the section of Archer Avenue between Wentworth and Princeton Avenue now bears the honorary name George Cheung Way.

In 1999, Anita and James Luk revitalized the tradition by launching the Chinatown 5K & Youth Run, an event that flourished under their leadership for 18 years. Their efforts brought joy to countless participants and helped showcase Chinatown’s vibrant culture and rich history. The race course took runners on a scenic journey through the neighborhood—starting on Archer Avenue across from Chinatown Square, passing through the iconic gateway on Wentworth, winding through Chinatown, stretching south toward Guaranteed Rate Field (home of the Chicago White Sox), and finishing back on Archer.

We want to bring back this cherished tradition continue to unite the community, celebrate our heritage, and inspire new generations of runners.
